FUEL – Mr. Fonk [Smile for a While]

FUEL

Mr. Fonk not just recorded the latest edition of Ohrenschmaus Podcast, he also answered some questions. As we told him about FUEL and that we wanted to establish a format that is quick to read he immediately was down for it. 3 Questions, 3 Answers and not only about music? Yes, there’s more than music. Especially when it comes to creativity and artistry. It’s important to step back from music and participate in other spaces or simply enjoy other things. Mr. Fonk told us a bit about things he enjoys besides spinning records and managing his label Smile for a While. He told us about his favourite books, yeah he broke the rules and told us about two. He also explains why he had to and it totally makes sense. On top, he also came along with a movie he really likes and a certain track that sticks with him and why he still loves this gem ever since he heard it for the first time. If you already checked out Drei Farben House’s FUEL edition, you might think those two are brothers. It’s more than disco for both, trust me. So here we go.

Favourite books: Mel Cheren – My life and the Paradise Garage & Andrew Holleran – Dancer from the dance

I read those books more or less simultaneously, so that’s why I nominate two. Both have brought me to tears. I had read a ton of books about Disco before, but only those two really made me feel the daily life of clubbers, DJs and other protagonists of the scene. One is a memoir, the other is more or less fictitious. One is post-AIDS, one pre-AIDS. Both suck you in and never let you go until the last page.

Mel Cheren – My life and the Paradise Garage

Andrew Holleran – Dancer from the dance

Favourite Movie: Studio 54

I saw this movie when I was 19 and starting to go clubbing and it played a major role in honing my musical tastes. Back then I felt like being that Shane 54 guy. Coming from the outskirts of Nuremberg, delving into these whole new things: Nightlife and Dance Music. Even though I have enjoyed dance music since around 1989, it was only around 1998 when I could start to go dancing myself. This was a major part of my early soundtrack.

Favourite Track: Ten City – That’s the way love is (Deep House Mix)

I heard this first around 2000 when I was checking tons of House Music CDs at Nuremberg’s only proper record store at the time: Laser Sound. This track has guided me through the ups and downs of love and life and its omnipotent meaning for me has never changed over time. I always liked Vocals in House Music. Vocals that mean something. This never changed either, not during the Techno heydays, not during minimal House or any other short-lived trend. The essence of House will prevail!

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #061 – Mr. Fonk

Our Podcasts

With number 61 in our small series we warmly welcome Mr. Fonk from Berlin. As many others he also has a Franconian background and shares our love for house. He clearly focuses on warm and sample based house as you can hear in his mix. Additionally he’s an expert when it comes to disco music which explains his love for disco infused house. Besides his musical taste he also is a very active person and manages three labels. Those go by the name of Smile For A While, All That Jelly and Edits For The Common Man. Some little background information we first met in May this year when we played at Paloma Bar in Berlin and only said hi to each other because we were kind of busy with so many friends of us that showed up. Afterwards we got in touch and immediately clicked. Since then we are in constant exchange and we came up with some ideas, one of them was a podcast for us. Few weeks later and here we are showcasing almost 2 hours of fine selected and mixed house that founds on house in all its facettes, colors and grooves. You will find some proper deep house, as well as disco influences and energetic, almost technoid stuff in there. It’s a real treat!

Stefanos Skifos – Kiss Klub Afterhour 11.11.17

Podcasts We Love

INTRO

Stefanos Skifos is one of the Die Rakete residents. His sound is minimalistic, but still energetic and diverse. It ranges from house tunes that really dive deep. More minimalistic and Romanian sounds. All the way to energetic, but still deep and melodic techno. This mix was recorded in November 2017 at the Kiss Klub party at Die Rakete. Kiss Klub is one of the longest running parties in town and also one of the best when it comes to deep and driving house or techno. Stefanos filled those 2 hours and 22 minutes with grooving minimal techno which we really enjoyed listening to. Always energetic, always on point and never too hard or banging. We can perfectly imagine how well this sound has fit into to early morning hours after the main booking. The mix is simply perfect for running sessions, cooking or to listen to at work. Excellent job!

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #056 – Andreas Koenig

Our Podcasts

New year new heat. With podcast #056 we start into the new season with Andreas Koenig. He’s a long time friend, promoter and dj. With his Badebeats and Bergbeats collective he hosts some fabulous open airs in the Nuremberg area. On top of that he plays at Kiss Klub every now and then with his homeboys as well. Besides being a very kind person we really like a lot he also brings some serious heat to the floor with his steady grooving selections. Deeply rooted in the minimal techno and micro house fields he always plays records that simply bounce through and hook you on the grooves with no effort. With his selection for our January podcast he also offers a more melodic and experimental side in the beginning and towards the end. Thanks for your effort, the great mix and your friendship Andi. We really appreciate that, your OP.

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #053 – Freund der Familie

Our Podcasts

Edition 53 is finally online and what a surprise, it is superb. We stumbled across Freund der Familie a few years ago when Baaz made a remix for their „The Symbian Remixes“ EP. Besides the remixes we decided to go through their catalogue and check out some mixes and podcasts. said and done, since then we are really enjoying the project a lot. Now we managed to get Freund der Familie for our podcast series. Lots of styles are offered throughout their contribution. Bumping house, smooth ambient, sharp vocals and some nice dub infusions can be found in there. This mix really offers a lot of variety and tension. It’s far from average and stands out in a positive way in contrast to most of the podcasts at the moment.

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #050 – Maria Brant

Our Podcasts

„Watching decks turn – but it is important to listen“ that’s the subheading for our 50th mix. The podcast series this time showcases Maria Brant. We never thought about making it to this ridiculous number, but here we are. And we will continue our work, that’s for sure. Maria Brant a DJ, radio host, promoter and of course a friend of us finally is involved in our small project. His mix is more than a podcast. It simply is a radio show without talking. The first half of the mix has a cosy mood and highlights some soft-beat stuff, ambient, electronica, world music and some minor drone influences. The second half matches the overall feeling and taste but showcases some more club orientated qualities. Left field and experimental house meets mid-tempo house and soft techno with retro synths, lush pads and lots of analogue sounds. Take your time and follow this beautiful acoustic scenery. Thanks Christian for participating, your OP.
