FUEL – Drei Farben House [Tenderpark Records]

FUEL

FUEL is a new category here at Ohrenschmaus Podcast. This quick to read format gives you a short but intense behind the scenes look. It’s full of content you might have been interested in for ages. What really touches a DJ or producer besides music? That’s what we are taking care of here. What really inspires or influences those musicians, label owner and radio hosts? How do they stay creative? What matters to them? What left them speechless or had an ongoing impact and why? Here they will answer what print media had an impact, which piece of music or audio touched them and what full-video touched their soul. For the first one, we start with Drei Farben House. Tenderpark’s label head is around for many years and always displays a great sense for uplifting house and disco music. Also, a musician that names himself after a movie perfectly fits our requirements. With his musical background, it is no surprise that he came up with disco related answers.

Favourite book: Hot Stuff – Disco and the remaking of American Culture

My favourite book is Hot Stuff – Disco and the remaking of American Culture by Alice Echols because the author makes clear how much the 1970s Disco revolution is linked to the gay liberation movement, feminism and the black freedom struggle. She shows that without the intervention of these marginalised groups Disco would not have been possible. At the same time, these countercultural actors lay the ground for everything we nowadays consider underground club culture. It all started back then, folks! This fantastic book has been given to me by my premier Disco friend Vina Yun who not only works in the field of feminist journalism but who is also a great Disco DJ herself and a great friend.

Hot Stuff: Disco and the Remaking of American Culture

Most seen movie: The Bodyguard

I’ve seen the kitsch movie The Bodyguard so many times that I’ve lost count of it. I mainly keep watching it because Whitney Houston to me is the greatest vocalist of the last 100 years and I just love to watch and hear her sing in the movie. And of course, the movie soundtrack consists of mainly her power songs. By the way: The soundtrack of The Bodyguard is until today the best selling movie soundtrack of all times! Only Whitney has the power to achieve that!

Favourite mix: Roy Thode live at Paradise Garage, New York 20th of Octobre 1979

I would like to direct you to this fantastic mix from Disco pioneer Roy Thode who played this marvellous set at the historic Paradise Garage in late 1979 – shortly after the so-called Disco backlash. But as you can hear from his set as well as from the performances of countless other DJs at that time Disco was not dead at all. And so did all the club hosts, dancers, promoters and activists think and kept on dancing.

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #057 – Herb LF

Our Podcasts

February brings the heat for better days. The frosty days slowly come to an end and the sun shines through more often as March comes closer. With a small delay we finally present you our 57th mix in the series. This time we convinced Herb LF from Duesseldorf to join the roster and luckily he was so kind to record an exclusive mix for us. There’s so much happening in this 75 minutes that we can’t get into details here. Starting out with a speech from and about the Zulu Nation, things can’t go wrong to be honest. Herb LF might be the first DJ we experienced that really tells a story during his podcast using some awesome soul and disco infused tracks throughout. There are major hip hop and breakbeat influences combined with synth-heavy house and some deep gems. There are bright and loud moments followed by very sensitive and calm parts, it’s just pure elegance. Everything fits perfectly without following a certain sound, tempo or feeling and that might be one of the toughest things to do. Go and ask your DJ friends, they will tell you the same. Have a listen or two, or more. Enjoy the journey and thanks Herb LF your mix is quite outstanding. Love, your OP.

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #050 – Maria Brant

Our Podcasts

„Watching decks turn – but it is important to listen“ that’s the subheading for our 50th mix. The podcast series this time showcases Maria Brant. We never thought about making it to this ridiculous number, but here we are. And we will continue our work, that’s for sure. Maria Brant a DJ, radio host, promoter and of course a friend of us finally is involved in our small project. His mix is more than a podcast. It simply is a radio show without talking. The first half of the mix has a cosy mood and highlights some soft-beat stuff, ambient, electronica, world music and some minor drone influences. The second half matches the overall feeling and taste but showcases some more club orientated qualities. Left field and experimental house meets mid-tempo house and soft techno with retro synths, lush pads and lots of analogue sounds. Take your time and follow this beautiful acoustic scenery. Thanks Christian for participating, your OP.

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #049 – Glenn Arkton

Our Podcasts

Glenn Arkton is a very talented dj from South Africa. To be more exact from Johannesburg. He follows the series for quite a long time and we kept in touch for quite a bit of time. Always impressed by his kind and positive vibes we connected months ago and that’s when we felt how enthusiastic he is towards music. He really digs deep and soaks it all in. That deeply impressed us and so we checked his mixes and what can we say they are great. So is he and that’s why he is now contributing the 49th mix. Enjoy his superb selection and the brilliant vibe, your OP.

Interview: Tilman – „Creativity comes and goes, sometimes I end up with something great and work on it, or it’s nothing I like and just let it go.“

DJsInterviewsProducer

Tilman from Mainz is a busy person right now. After running his great klamauk label for quite a while already in a successful way he now also takes care of Fine, the label he runs with Johannes Albert. If you know Johannes and Tilman you definitely get why they get along so well and run the label with great effort. Tilman is positive all the way, not just regards his music, but as well as a person. You feel his warmth and his enthusiasm for music and life from the very beginning, even before he says something. Coming from the hip hop background, making his way through house, soul, disco and funk he now is where he is. Displpaying a huge variety of sounds and styles, how he got there and what happened on the way is just one facet we talked about.

Interview: Marbod – „Producing music primarily for the dance floor would quickly weaken my will and enthusiasm.“

DJsInterviewsProducer

We finally managed to get in touch with Marbod to talk about his musical upbringing, what impact hip hop had in his musical growth, what it’s like to run a label and what drinks he’s into at the moment. Dirk Puchta really is a jack of all trades. He’s not only producing house and techno under his Marbod moniker, but also running the neat Lofile Records imprint and his own cafe Filterhouse, located at Graefekiez in Berlin. Pretty much to do, but still Dirk might be one of the loveliest, funniest and cheerful perons you’ll probably meet. On top he’s producing and playing great music, his food and coffee is delicious as well. Almost too good to be true.

Interview: Johannes Albert – “ If people go freakin‘ nuts I just sleep much better that night, you know?“

DJsInterviewsProducer

5 years of „Frank Music“ that’s the perfect reason to have a quick chat with label owner Johannes Albert. Strongly connected to Würzburg and Franconia in general he showed his love with the name of the label. Now residing in Berlin, Johannes loves to play all kind of stuff. Whether it is disco, 90s house, or what ever. During our conversation we got to know his „Let’s be Frank“ side of his character, on top he shared some insights about the label, his productions and what he does during his DJ sets. You can experience an excerpt of his DJ set from the 5th of december at Farbfernseher, Berlin as Ohrenschmaus Podcast #037. Keep reading

Hip Hop Selection #012.2 „Synthetix“ by Jazz:Pa

Our SLCTNs

With Ohrenschmaus Podcast Hip Hop Selection #012.2 we continue our split series by our good friend Jazz:Pa and finish this project as well. In selection #012.1 Benni took care of organic sounds with that golden feeling from the 90ies, that’s why part one was called Organix. In part two he takes care of synthetic music from the hip hop field, including so called future beats, bass music and just modern hip hop beats and rap tracks. That’s also the sound you’ll find at his party Beat Thang at K4, one of the best parties in and around Nuremberg. If you want to know more about Benni aka Jazz:Pa please check part one of this split series and take the time to read the short information there as well.

Hip Hop Selection #006 „From now to the Doom Bap“ by Basti An Reinsch

Our SLCTNs

We are a bit late with our new years Hip Hop Selection surprise, but now the heat is on. It was a wonderful coincidence that we met Basti after a night of relaxed djing in Magdeburg at a party early in the morning. Normally conversations are really flat and mostly boring, but Basti really hooked us. He is one of us! Loving house and hip hop all the way from the early beginnings to now, so we immediately set up a slot in our Hip Hop Selection for him and here we are. It’s 2014 but if you listen to the mix it could be any year from 1990 to 2014, just check it out. Quality tunes and this guy knows how to play hip hop. We are glad to welcome you to the Ohrenschmaus family Basti, it’s always nice to meet likeminded people. Love to you and of course the listeners, keep real hip hop alive. One, your Ohrenschmaus podcast.
