Review: Simon Ferdinand – Kingsize EP – Polycarp

The „Kingsize EP“ is the debut release on Simon Ferdinand’s very own and freshly founded Polycarp Records imprint. With several releases on labels like Night Drive Music, Landed Records and Frank Music he already put his name on the map. Now with his new label he has a proper foundation to release his own tracks and works from friends and artists that match his idea or share his vision of contemporary house music. With the „Kingsize EP“ he sticks to his sound with loop-based and clearly structured club tracks that are still playful and come with a certain drive. The first release is a solid package of three original tracks and a decent Map.ache remix off the title track.

The title track „Kingsize“ opens things up on the first release from the Hamburg based label. A punchy kick and dreamy chords start this playful love affair. Squeaky string sounds float through the background and play tag with a nicely filtered vocal that generates a nice drive throughout. The very simple arrangement in combination with the very complex structure of samples functions great. It has a quite basic vibe with a nice twist and transports a superb feeling of classic house music with lots of melodic elements. „Kingsize (Map.ache Queensize Remix)“ ends the a-side by turning the original into a more mysterious version. A bit of melancholy comes with this piece of music, but still spreads hope and joy at the same time. Mystic! Classy percussions in the background ease the rougher elements of this remix in great fashion and complement the gloomy vocal part to make this track a very special and emotional one. „Bound“ kicks off the b-side, an acid inspired bassline and sharp drum programming end up in a nice drive. Deep and mystic pads make their way from the back into the foreground and match the rhythmical elements perfectly. Pitched vocal samples in between add some mystery and darkness to this piece of music which could be classified as some rougher house or smooth techno. Very stripped back, but still energetic! The Last tune on Polycarp Records‘ first release is „Flashbone“. A rough and stomping kick, a bouncing bassline and an extremely soft pad match each other in a very unique way. You can feel the warmth of this track from the very beginning and as well start to bounce to this one immediately. Lovely house vibes all the way, for us that’s the real gem on this release. It’s such a dreamful tune that makes you feel better without losing contact to the dance floor. That’s the perfect sound for a sunrise, the last warm sunbeams in autumn or whatever could be a very special and positive moment. The „Kingsize EP“ simply is a well curated first EP on Polycarp Records and offers some fine house for almost every taste.
