Review: Interstate – Untitled EP – Whytenumbers

Interstate’s Untitled EP marks the first release for the newly founded Whytenumbers label. The strange spelling of „whyte“ is a small hint to the main label it belongs to, we are talking about Blaqnumbers of course. While Blaqnumbers always played with a bit of downtempo and hip hop elements in combination with raw and deep house sounds, Whytenumbers now gets a bit more experimental and takes those elements more serious, as well as serving a bit of uptempo house as well. Interstate’s EP clearly depicts a strong relationship to early hip hop and electronic influences throughout. Four sublime tracks came across the road and build a great debut release for the Whytenumbers imprint.

„Gangster Rap“ opens the stage for Whytenumbers first EP by Interstate. As the name already tells he clearly is a rap head and from the very beginning you can experience the parallels. A lot of electronica is involved in this tune, the whole sound aesthetic sticks to the early days of hip hop. A nice portion of gangsta-funk is transmitted in an old school house context. You could most probably call it g-house or something like that, pounding kicks and aggressively played chords give a decent amount of power to the track. With the soft string and playful west coast elements this track gets balanced right and serves a lot of diversity and funk. „You know, I know“ follows up slowing things down a bit. Organic claps, a floating pad and a squeaky string end up in a summerly house tune. Imaging this track to be played while driving in Miami Beach with an old Buick, the palm trees pass by or later while smoking some chronic with your homies, to stay in the west coast feeling. „Mind Games“ opens up the b-side and introduces a whole new sound to the outstanding a-side we just experienced. Filters and delays spice up the clap, dreamful chords and the great drum set clearly take care of something new. It’s disco time now! Old school disco-house as we love it, many try to re-create the feeling that was crafted back then. The vocal takes control, a lot of power and soul, perfectly embedded into the arrangement. The bassline is super raw and has that oldschool touch that is needed, this track simply gives joy and will rock the dancefloor for sure. What a bliss! „I want this groove to never end“ closes this strong EP by Interstate and I want this EP to never end is the only thought I have in mind. Old school deep house at it’s best. A energetic drum arrangement leads to a steady groove and drive. Extremely long lasting pads float around and ease the track whenever it’s time for. The sounds are organic and fire up that classic house sound as it should. Although „I want this groove to never end“ is nothing new and can’t keep up with those three tracks before, which is to be fair a very hard thing to do, it still is a great tribute to the early nineties house music. This debut EP on Whytenumbers is pure joy. The a-side delivers two great hip hop influenced house tracks in great manner and on the b-side you experience two tracks that stick to the roots of house music with a beatiful disco theme and a nice deep house cut. Exceptional describes this EP best if we would have just one word.
