Review: Red On – Ghana Remixed – Verydeeprecords

HouseReviewsTechno

The 15th release of the Nuremberg based label Verydeeprecords is the first one to appear on vinyl, after several tapes and digital projects from artists like Bambi Davidson, Christoff Riedel, Vincent von Flieger, Willis Anne, Magic Meru and many more. „Ghana Remixed“ by Red On is a great four track heavy EP with remixes and edits by The Marx Trukker, A. Elm, Alex Ketzer and Red On himself under his Philipp Roth alias. As usual there were no musical boundaries on this project and it ended up with diverse re-interpretations of the original tracks, somewhere between left-field house and experimental techno.

„Ghana 11 (Moona) – Marx Mid Term Cycle“ is the first track on the „Ghana Remixed“ EP, softly floating pads are the foundation of this slow lo-fi bouncer. Dirty drum sounds perfectly fit the aesthetics of this raw beauty. Lush kicks and screaming samples float in the deeper sound areas to generate a distinct and calm house vibe that introduces a gentle feeling throughout. A minimalistic and clear structured track with slight changes comes out as a whole. Pure left-field club sounds with a mystic touch! „Ghana 6 – A. Elm Remix“ follows up and offers a more dance floor orientated piece of music. Fine acid influenced bass sounds, everlasting pads and stomping kicks evolve to a dark and blissful track that could be categorized between house and techno. Pounding percussions and powerful drum sounds are hitting hard. Small breaks work out pretty effectively and let the pads stand out even more. Once again the structure is kept very simple and the focus is clearly on the vibe of the tune. Highly emotional and very agile stuff from A. Elm here. The b-side starts with „Ghana 10 (Miira) – Philipp Roth Edit“, Red On himself twists his track around under his Philipp Roth alias. A neat little intro depicts a great sense for beautiful pads and strings from the very beginning here. A lot of percussion and drum work in the lower frequencies in combination with some off-beat elements turn this track into a mixture between basic house and experimental techno. Hypnotic acid bleeps and a slow tempo end up in a great track for the earlier hours of a club night or an atmospheric podcast. The universe never seemed to be closer than in this interpretation of „Ghana 10 (Miira)“! „Ghana 10 (Miira) – Alex Ketzer Remix“ closes this EP in style. Lush kicks and rough hits join forces and build a solid construction for unobtrusive drum programming. Long lasting samples and a nicely filtered vocal fit into this framework as they should. Massive sound walls clearly introduce influences from Alex Kretzer’s musical diversity. All in all the „Ghana Remixed“ EP is a great package for lovers of left-field house and experimental techno, combining more powerful tracks for dance floors as well as calmer tracks for simple listening pleasures. The arrangements are very clear and the experimental parts can be found in the sounds themselves, displaying the different musical taste and influences of all four remixers. Lo-fi until i die!
