Review: Baaz – The Reason / Ancestor’s Fun – Slices of Life

The ninth release of Berlin’s very own Slices of Life again showcases sublime tracks by Baaz. After „Judy’s Bass“ and „Swimmer“ here comes „The Reason / Ancestor’s Fun“. It’s the third time Bastian Völker releases on Barbara Preisinger’s label and again he simply delivers a nice package of grooving house cuts. Two strong tracks with different approaches and benefits made it onto the record and please the dancers or listeners with steady beats and an strong love for details.

„The Reason“ opens the record and therefore can be found on the a-side of the record. Crisp sounding snares are layered with great effort from the very beginning to start out with a nice amount of energy. Shortly after some dubby vocals are softly delayed through the grit and settle on the extra soft pads that float in and out in a calm waves. Some hip hop influences can be found and experienced if you listen to the kick arrangement. Filtered and less noisy kicks find their place in between and offer some more dynamic to the steady and driving drum arrangement. „The Reason“ ends up as a clearly structured house tune that has a lovely feeling overall with some cozy pads and many different sounds that come in for small passages and add a nice amount of variety. On the flip side „Ancestor’s Fun“ is doing the business. Organic drum patterns have a meeting with a nice sub kick and a powerful kick that stomps on top of it. The drum sounds are very gritty and almost tend to oversteer, without sounding too raw at all. Melodic pads float in and out as usual, the timing on those pads is just perfect. As soon as you begin to miss them they are coming back to please you. Lovely done and even better as soon as the vocals pop in to fill up the space even more. Playful percussions make their way into the arrangement in great style and add some fluffiness to the stomping lower frequencies, there’s just a certain balance between all those different frequency areas that is hard to build. „Ancestor’s Fun“ is pure magic, if somebody asks you what the definition of dreamful deep house is, this might be a proper answer. Don’t say anything just play this track.
