Review: Opal Sunn - Untitled EP - Planet Sundae

Opal Sunn – Part I – Planet Sundae

HouseReviews

Opal Sunn comes out with their “Part I” EP on Planet Sundae at the perfect time. The cold and stormy days slowly disappear, instead the sun comes out for a few hours and warms our hearts, bodies and souls with some positive beams. Hiroaki OBA and Al Kassian, created the perfect vinyl for this weather shift with the lovely four tracker which they’ve created between 2015 and 2016. Together they’ve decided to go by the name of Opal Sunn and besides the beauty of the name it also perfectly delivers how the sound feels like: sunny. But not in a cheesy way, it’s very sophisticated and independent in comparison to many other releases at the moment. But not just the artists invested their best in creating the tracks, the guys from Planet Sundae completed the EP with a superb cover. The artwork is quite uncommon for house releases and is a nice mixture of old school paint feelings and modern fluid 3D objects. The RGB color shift in the liquid on the cover is just spectacular and a real eye catcher. Just quality work from all protagonists.

Review: DJ Loser – DJ Loser – Bliq

HouseReviews

Bliq showcasts DJ Loser’s self titled debut as their 15th release so far. If you take a closer look you will notice that the label already was a platform for many talents that debuted their first physical release on. This time you hear 4 powerful tracks on the a- and b-side, with 3 original tracks and 1 remix by Seixlack. Rough and raw house sounds melt together with driving drums, a bit of acid and lo-fi sound design. Keep reading

Ohrenschmaus Podcast #039 – Garçon

Our Podcasts

Time is running and sometimes you need to get away from all the fastly moving things in life to regain some energy. This progress was musically translated in perfection by Garçon with his mix for our 39th installment. Deep and unbelievably melodic mid-tempo house in perfection ends up in 60 minutes of slow motion madness. You listen to his selection, his calm mixing and the great selection takes you on a ride serving your ears a cup of green tea while you lose the feeling for time. Simply a nicely done hour that eases your mind by the swiss fella. The first time we noticed him was back then when he did a mix for “Keep It Deep” which now has transformed into “Emotional Content”. With Timnah Sommerfeldt he hosts the radio show “Home” on Radio Ghost Town that already invited DJs like Gerd Janson, Kastil, Candy Pollard, Ben Ufo, Eli Verveine and many more. We are really thankful for his contribution and absolutely fell in love with his creation. So here you go ladies and gents, please enjoy this wonderful experience, your OP.

Mix of the Week #10 // 2016: XDB at Control Club, Bucharest

Highlights of the WeekMix of the Week

We started our week with the live recording of XDB’s set at Control Club in Bucharest. XDB is one of the djs that are in the game for ages and still keep things hot always treating you with quality records and a superb vibe while playing a show. Atmospheric tracks that are guarded by some acid and dub bombs all the way. That might be a short description of this set, of course as usual XDB offers you powerful tracks that move your body and shows his unique way of arranging a club set. Old and forgotten gems and new releases or promos, Kosta always keeps you digging for the beauties he dropped. One of the most impressive things of his mixes for sure is the amount of widely unknown tracks from back in the days, but he also shows us his favourite tracks on Facebook with his regular postings of “Tracks i do really LOVE…” and he never disappoints musically. One of the best djs and producers for us. It seems like he is gifted on both ends with a very special attempt towards playing vinyl and creating his own productions.

MARQUIS HAWKES – SWEET – HOUNDSTOOTH:

With his EP SWEET Marquis Hawkes delivers a superb 4-tracker on Houndstooth, a label we never recognized so far. When I Get Home starts this beautifully compiled record, an outstanding r’n’b vocal which is filtered and looped just in the right amount to hypnotize you and connect you to the groove. Crisp drum patterns produce a great vibe without being to intense, soft strings carry on the atmosphere and the great feeling on this track. This definitely ist the outstanding work on this record. At the Witness Stand is the second track and adds another facette to the release, pounding drums, a heavy bassline and shuffled vocals take you back to NY and also remind us off the late 80s hip hop tracks. On the flip side SWEET continues with progressive vocal sampling, the repeating “woho” combined with a sharp bassline make this one a solid peak time track that serves a nice old school touch. What a Relief closes the Ep with overpowered kicks and a lot of percussion use and the small sound snippets almost dance between the programmed drums to make this into a very powerful and strange track that could fit in-between in almost every acid house set.

ALEX SEIDEL – MONEY $EX 04 – MONEY $EX:

Money $ex continues their legacy with releasing another sample based house record. Their fourth installment is Alex Seidel’ first release and adds another great record to Money $ex’ Catalogue. The Intro adds unusual sounds to the label, +encounter- is a synth-loaded ambient track that provides dark and suspect sounds. With Groove Attack as the second track on the a-side, things finally go in the known direction. Summerly chords supported by a funky bassline and perfect fitting strings generate a great feel good track that gets every dancefloor going. Smooth sample house at it’s best with well dosed use of percussion. Boogie Down Sessions opens the b-side and this breakbeat really carries you away. This is the exceptional work on Alex’ 12-inch. Warm patterns popping up everywhere, on point percussions combined with perfect matching acid sounds turn this one into a cosmic dream. The follow-up track Midnight Circle combines all the sounds we heard before into a playful midtempo sample-house track supported by acid basslines, futuristic patterns and looped vocals. The outro w.t.t.d., like the intro +encounter-, depicts dark synth patterns, with industrial sounds and jarring strings which let this record come to an argumentative end.
