Review: Javier Carballo – Loopera Prima EP (incl. S. Moreira Remix) – Tabla Records
Javier Carballo is a new and upcoming producer from the Canary Islands. The Spaniard makes his debut on Tabla Records after output on labels like La Vie En Rose and his very own Overall Music Limited Series imprint. The “Loopera Prima EP” depicts his sense for minimalistic and driving techno and house music. The sixth publication from Tabla offers three original tracks by Javier and a great remix by S. Moreira who already made a name for himself with his productions for the Slow Life collective from Berlin.
“Loopera Prima” opens this EP with his versatile percussions and bouncing drums that pop up in places you wouldn’t expect them to be. Combined with the reserved appealing sound snippets and moving pads the minimalistic attempt is transported perfectly. Supported by sparse and crisp drums this track shows how difficult it is to create a unique flow with reduced sounds and a simple arrangement. “Brainstorm” is the second track by Javier with a hypersensitive string floating through the background, generating a fluffy feeling and a certain deepness. Pounding kicks, an agile bassline and crisp drums on top create a great groove that makes you bounce to this piece of music from the beginning. The slow build up that steadily adds new sounds and facettes offers you a large variety that unexcitedly gets the tune going. Few sounds end up in a very enjoyable work that takes you under it’s spell. The last original track goes by the name “Ilusion Optica”. In contrast to the a-side this track relies on his rough bassline and more dynamic pads. The heavy use of reverbs and delays reveal wider and brighter sounds which offer a more complex arrangement that still keeps things simple and minimalistic. Javier Carballo’s idea of simplicity and stripped back techno is translated perfectly throughout the whole EP. The Spaniard is definitely a producer all the lovers of minimalistic club music should have on their lists. S. Moreira, member of the Slow Life collective, closes this EP with his remix for the title track “Loopera Prima”. From the very beginning you can clearly recognize Moreira’s thumbprint. The drums are rougher, the bassline is scruffier and the whole sound is a bit more powerful. He turned the original material into a heavy loop that has a sublime complexity. Parts from the original track are still there. You can feel Javier’s presence wrapped in Sergio’s blanket. Hyperactive minimalism at it’s best, this track is simply thrilling. Dozens of sounds pop up and change their behaviour constantly, after listening to this track for the fifth time you still stumble across sounds, pattern shifts and other things you didn’t notice before. It’s not simply a remix, it’s a trip and everyone should sign up for his ride full of satisfaction.
